Photo Friday – May 2017

May 5, 2017

Today we acknowledge the recent passing of one of Paterson’s notable athletes and businessmen. Jacob ‘Jake’ Edelstien was a star athlete at the Paterson YM/YWHA. He was signed to a minor league contract in the early 1950’s with the Brooklyn Dodgers and played a couple of years in their farm system. After his army service in Korea he and his beloved brother Stan operated Edelstein’s Office Furniture in Paterson for some 50 years. Jake will be missed by all in the North Jersey Jewish community. Our photos this week celebrate a portion of Jake’s life.

Batter up! Here is a photo of Jake in the batter’s box likely taken in 1952 while he was playing for the Valdosta Dodgers. He’s obviously lookin’ ’em over and waiting for a fat pitch to hit!
