Reuben Kaufman, the first Paterson Jew to be killed in WWI…..Born in West Hartelpool, England, Reuben came to the U.S. at an early age. He enlisted in Company D, 114th Infantry at the outset of the war. He was killed in action on October 12, 1918, during the Allies’ Meuse-Argonne Offensive, and is buried in the cemetery at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery Romagne, France. The local Jewish War Veterans’ Post #36 bears his name, along with Sidney Harris, who died in WWII.

top in the back is Beth Baxt. Cheryl Dorman is in second row center with striped shirt bending over. Judy Lee is standing on the far right.

The Spartans were a group of boys from Paterson who started out as campers one summer at Camp Veritans, Haledon, N.J. Moe Liss, now a board member of the JHSNJ, was their counselor. The Spartans are still in existence, including some of those seen above. Moe and the Spartans are still going on field trips and enjoying barbecue’s together.

October 11, 1964 at the Hotel Essex House, Newark, N.J……and the smiles continue! On the
left: Samuel Kalish proudly stands by his baby daughter Ruth Kalish (Cohen )in 1918. They are the grandfather and mother of the groom, Arnie.
MYSTERY BONUS PHOTO #1 : This photo is a mystery to us but it is a most intriguing

Bonus Photo #2 – Joyce Rogol’s (Feldstein) birthday party…..sitting l-r: Mary Ellen Forbes (Kramer), Joan Kwait, ?., ?. and Miriam Kraemer (Gray)…..Top row l-r: ?., Estelle Roses, Sheila Eckhaus, Janet Abramowitz, Joyce Rogol, Jackie Buyer, Janice Bornstein and Judy Goldberg…..Mary Ellen Kramer, future wife of Paterson mayor, Lawrence “Pat” Kramer, would later spearhead the campaign to save the Paterson silk mills from destruction. She fought the good fight of preserving the “Great Falls Historic District” as a landmark site for future generations. “The Mary Ellen Kramer Park” at the falls is named after her.
